TO THE INTERVIEW
This
is the written transcript of the interview:-
"EDWARD
STOURTON -Time is 21 minutes to 9. September the 11th has spurned all
sorts of conspiracy theories and some of them are held by very distinguished
people among them no less a figure than the great American novelist Gore
Vidal. l spoke to him and asked him how he thought the United States has
changed in the five years since the attacks.
GORE
VIDAL - Well - I feel like I'm a spokesman for Carthage - on Roman television
or radio. Ah - we have been sown - with salt - our republic by the success
of Osama Bin Laden or whoever it was who was behind the ahm - the 911
affair. And since then we have lost the American republic - I never thought
it would go down so quickly - with so little fight. Internally we've lost
it. We've not lost it to the foreign er terrorist enemy - tho that was
the trigger - that was the catalyst for losing one
by one the Bill Of Rights - which I could enumerate - but anybody there
who has a copy of our Constitution or indeed er a slightly longer pieces
on the subject. One by one - due process of law which is the basis to
the liberties enjoyed once upon a time by American citizens.
That's just been subverted by the secret camps around the world by kidnapping
people - holding them to trial - executing them
- who knows what - has been going on. We were transformed into
a police state and the ??? Mr Bin Laden if he was responsible and
I suspect now he's a bogeyman that we invented along the way
- although plainly he does not wish us well.
EDWARD
STOURTON - Well ...
GORE
VIDAL - I would say - they got their wish. That was the death blow to
the American republic - something that I'm one
of the few American's who cares about - and indeed knows about.
EDWARD STOURTON - D... Do you not think you are overstating the case a
little - I mean for example you mentioned the secret prisons where ahm

VIDAL - Yeah
EDWARD
STOURTON - ... people have been questioned I forget the phrase that the
President used but clearly rather more toughly than
GORE
VIDAL - Rendition
EDWARD
STOURTON - rendition - tho when he explained that they'd been interrogated
in - ahm - a more forceful way than one would normally expect. - ahm -
But the fact that he's come out just as this anniversary's approaching
and felt compelled to admit that those places exist - is that not a recognition
that the spirit of democracy is alive and well - that erm the blank cheque
won't go on being honoured forever?
GORE
VIDAL - Of course it's being honoured for ever. Is he doing anything about
it? He's endorsed torture. And the
Vice President Mr Cheney is should be the Vice sadomasachist Vice President
who's in total an affair ... he's hysterical
on the subject. He's gone to Congress to testify how we need to be able
to torture people - ah - NO !!! The
victory is all on the sides of these gas and oil people who have siezed
control of the three branches of the Government. It's beautifully done
- it's a great - it was great coup d'état. And were
there any voices against it? Very very few. Most people were too busy
- you know - looking at our dreadful media which
is collusive in all of this since they belong to the same people who have
produced the oil and gas tyranny etc etc.
EDWARD
STOURTON - And all of this malais you put down to what happened on September
the eleventh.
GORE VIDAL - It's a trigger. It was
exploited. No - it's just - we didn't see over - you know -
ahm - we - we've lost some buildings - what we have lost - the fallout
has been starting with the er - Homeland Security they already use the
word reminiscent of the 3rd Reich - but not a normal phrase for American's
to use - their Homeland - you know. I have never heard an American say
that spontaneously until it was inflicted upon us by the Government. No
- we have - one by one they have grabbed all the centres of power in the
United States and they govern really pretty much by decree now.
We have no idea what is going on - er - with the CIA - with the FBI -
we have no idea what's really going on in er Iraq - with the military.
The military every now and then - a General
will complain - and then we - we hear no more of him.
It is not a free and open country
and your question to me originally was what is the fallout - what is the
result five years later of nine eleven? And I am telling you - we lost
the republic and they won !!!
