Sentance
says Bank needs to act over inflation
Bank
of England hawk Andrew Sentance said the longer
the central bank delays taking action against rising inflation
the bigger the threat to its credibility.
Policymakers
should look through the shock economic contraction in the fourth quarter
as recoveries are never smooth, he said in an interview with CityAM published
on Wednesday.
"We
need to be prepared to look through fluctuations in GDP growth when we're
recovering from recession: growth figures are never linear and smooth
in recoveries," he was quoted as saying.
Data last
week showed Britain's economy shrank by 0.5 percent in the last three
months of 2010, but the decline was mainly due to bad weather.
The
leading hawk has been calling for an interest rate rise since June 2010,
and in January he was joined by one other colleague, Martin Weale.
