LIBYAN 'MONEY'
SHIP ESCORTED TO U.K. PORT
Officials
have seized a ship reportedly carrying £100m worth of Libyan currency
and escorted the vessel into a British port.
It is
understood the
Sloman Provider was intercepted after being tracked to British waters
when it aborted an attempt to dock in the Libyan
capital Tripoli over the weekend.
The Home
Office has refused to confirm the exact value on board.
The vessel
was taken into Harwich docks led by HMC Vigilant.
A Home Office
spokesman said: "A vessel which had been
heading to Libya returned to the UK on Wednesday morning.
"The
ship was escorted into the port of Harwich by the UK Border Agency cutter
HMC Vigilant.
"A
number of containers were offloaded from the boat and have been taken
under control of UK Border Agency and have been moved to a secure location.
"The
cargo is understood to contain a significant quantity of Libyan currency,
which is subject to a UN sanction", the spokesman added.
One port
worker who loaded the Sloman Provider before
it originally left Harwich told Sky News that they regularly
deal with containers filled with foreign currency.
Asking to
remain anonymous, he said: "They always have extra security with
them when there's money inside.
"I
didn't realise though these ones might be going to Libya, you never really
think about where they are going." [TVOTW
INSERT - It's no-one elses business where it is going. The shipment belongs
to it's rightful owner. If that is the Republic of Libya - that is where
the shipment should go - and nowhere else !!! ]
HMC Vigilant
is an unarmed, 238-tonne patrol vessel built at Damen Shipyard in the
Netherlands. She was launched in 2003 at a cost of £4.3m.
She has
three sister ships operated by the UK Border Agency in British waters
- Seeker, Searcher and Valiant.
Last year
Vigilant's crew seized 661lb (300kg) of cocaine off the Isle of Wight.
