How The President And The Bush Team Convinced America The War Was Necessary

• In the summer of 2002, Karl Rove began to shift the national discourse away from terrorism to Saddam and Iraq. Even though the CIA reported to Congress there was no connection, the White House kept talking about 9/11 and Saddam.

• Eventually, the strategy was to suggest Saddam would try to sell potential weapons of mass destruction to terrorists. The CIA said he had none of those, either. But the president kept repeating his chant about 9/11.
  
  
• When 9/11 and weapons of mass destruction did not seem to make a sufficient case, the language out of the White House began to be related to liberating the people of Iraq, even though the U.S. has managed to avoid liberating the peoples of Rwanda, Burundi, and Cuba.
  
  
• Unfortunately for Rwanda and Burundi, where more than a million people have died, the number one export is yams, not oil.
  
  
• The final push to sell the Iraqi war involved talking about the creation of a Palestinian state within three years after Iraq falls.

• Mr Bush does not talk about oil or the fact that the Middle East is more deeply troubled, in a large measure, because he ignored it for the first 18 months in office.

The Role Of Religion In The Iraqi War

George Bush is a man who once told a Jewish reporter that Jews would not go to heaven because they did not believe in Jesus Christ.

He and his advisors understand even less about the Arab world. While the entire Arab world wants Saddam removed, they do not trust the country doing the removal.

The U.S. has a long history of supporting oppressive regimes in the Arab world, putting in power leaders who mistreated their own people. There would have been no Khomeini in Iran, nor American hostages, if the U.S. had not propped up the Shah for so long, gave him money and military might.

Moderate Arabs expect the U.S. and other western countries to use up all of Iraq's oil reserves to serve their own economies and not the Arab people. While Mr. Bush believes he is a part of God's divine plan in dealing with Iraq, he refuses to acknowledge that Arabs, including Iraqis, believe God is on their side.

Fundamentalist Christians, who comprise much of the conservative base needed for Mr. Bush's re-election, like what is happening with the war. They see their fate intertwined with that of Israel and for biblical scripture to play out as recorded, Israel's fate must be made secure by the U.S.

The Bush administration refuses to acknowledge that the only thing the Arab world hates more than Saddam Hussein is the idea that American troops will soon be occupying sacred, Arab soil.

He was so inept on the matter of religion, that when he first began speaking of the campaign to get rid of Saddam, Mr. Bush referred to it as a crusade, unaware of the great, historical weight that term carries in that part of the world.

What's Next? - The Expansion Of The American Empire

The same advisors, who convinced Mr Bush the world had changed after 9/11 and that he needed to go after Saddam, will still have his ear.

They are likely to convince him that Iran needs to be stabilized. Iraq will be used as a base to press the war on terrorism further. U.S. troops can be expected to make incursions into Syria, Pakistan, Iran, and elsewhere that there are likely terrorist influences.

Iran, however, will become a target for takeover, in much the same way Iraq was conquered. The White House has avoided telling the American public of the great bitterness within Iraq between the Shi'a and Sunni sects.

After the fall of Baghdad, the Shi'a can be expected to exact revenge for 25 years of oppression, murder, and torture. Scholars of Islam predict brutal massacres and street warfare, after Saddam is deposed.

To the north, the Turks have long had their eyes on Kurdish oil fields. They might end up fighting the Kurds for control while the various Kurdish factions kill each other for that same control.

To the east, it is not improbable that Iran will try a land grab along its border with Iraq. The U.S. military will be asked to stabilize all of this in order to bring in American economic interests to rebuild the oil fields. The war against Iraq has the potential to be Vietnam without the trees.

The War And Presidential Politics

In Jan. 2002, Bush senior advisor Karl Rove told Republicans that they could run their mid-term elections on the war. In June, a diskette of Rove's was found outside the White House, which suggested the same thing.

After the mid-terms, a memo from political director Ken Mehlman was leaked, with the plan, entitled, "Run on the war in '04." U.S. troops will still be occupying Iraq in Nov. of '04. The White House will be asking voters to re-elect Mr. Bush so that he can finish the war on terrorism.

But will it work? The American economy shows no signs of recovery and voter patience for open-ended wars disappeared with the Vietnam conflict. The timing of this war, a little over a year ahead of re-election, is almost precisely the same as that of the first Gulf War, prosecuted by Mr. Bush's father. And the economy may be worse than the one his father could not help. Does this mean an historical repeat for the Bush family?

Also, if Saddam disappears, and no body can be found, Mr. Bush may not get the complete victory he needs for political success in '04. There will be no trace of either Saddam or bin Laden after much American suffering, and high unemployment.

Domestically, the president is pursuing record deficits to pay for the war, even though his party has spent decades complaining that Democrats were on the verge of ruining the country with high deficits.

How will this impact voter choice? Most likely, they can be expected to vote based on their economic situations, not on the war with Iraq. Mr Bush may win his war with Iraq but lose his battle for re-election.

II'S ABOUT OIL, NOT TERRORISM

A recently declassified presidential document from the first Bush administration reveals the policy of the US toward dictators in control of oil. The executive order clearly describes the American refusal to tolerate any restriction over the flow of oil, especially as it relates to Iraq.

• Signed by President George H.W. Bush, the document indicates the US cannot withstand any constriction in its oil lifeline. In fact, that is what his son's war is about, although the White House will not talk about it.
  
  

• It is unseemly to think that American kids would be put into combat for a tank of gas. But every other explanation fails to meet a rationale test.

• It isn't about terrorism because there is no link to Saddam.

• It isn't about liberating Iraqi people because we aren't liberating other oppressed nations.

• It isn't about a Palestinian state because we've shown no commitment to creating one.

• It isn't about weapons of mass destruction because the CIA and the UN have indicated there are none, other than the sarin gas and the anthrax, sold to Saddam by Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to use against Iran.

It's about oil, up to 200 billion barrels in the ground beneath Iraq, possibly more than in Saudi Arabia. That means it is about jobs and the economy in America. Unfortunately, the president has not been honest about this fact with the American people. If he were, support for the attack would disappear.

• The US cannot tolerate an adversarial dictator in charge of that much oil.
